Behind the Scenes
Here are some of the processes I use to make my artwork.
I use a lot of handspun yarn in my artwork. I start with either raw sheep’s wool or pre-dyed roving and pick it, card it, and spin it.
I make all the paper that I use in my artwork. I use a wide variety of materials for my paper pulp, including found plant material, recycled paper, abaca, and cotton.
I use a rigid heddle loom to create the handwoven fabric that is a prominent feature in much of my work. Choosing warp and weft yarns that complement each other is one of my favorite parts of the process.
Collecting natural materials is an important part of my process. It’s also where I get a lot of my inspiration.
In addition to a regular sewing machine, I sometimes use a bicycle powered sewing machine to “draw” with thread. I built the sewing bike myself, and I usually use my handmade paper as a base for my drawings.
